Volunteer Requirements
School districts across the state have instituted a number of requirements for adults wishing to volunteer on public school campuses. While some of the requirements may be seen as hurdles to volunteering, they are specifically meant to protect our students from contact with adults who may be a safety risk.
CKM administrators and teachers ask for your cooperation and patience in navigating the process. The strictest requirements apply to situations where students would be in the care of volunteers without teacher supervision (such as driving a group of students in a car to a field trip). Many volunteer opportunities require no more than filling out a simple form or expressing an interest in helping at CKM.
Refer to the District’s website at www.scusd.edu/volunteer for detailed information and the most current volunteer packet.
Below is an overview of the process for volunteering at CKM. Completed forms must be turned in to CKM’s Office Manager (see Staff Directory). Contact the Office Manager if you have additional questions about volunteering.
Supervised work with students
The following items are required of parents wishing to work directly with students under the direction of a teacher or administrator. The forms are included in the volunteer packet.
Required Forms:
- Volunteer Registration Form
- Volunteer Sex Offender Check Authorization Form (SOC-1) (required annually, free of charge)
- Proof of Negative TB Test (required every four years)
Unsupervised work with students
The strictest screening applies to volunteers who may work with or assist students without teacher oversight (for example, driving students in a private vehicle to a field trip). These volunteers must undergo a complete background check which includes fingerprinting. These forms are included in the volunteer packet with the exception of the automobile forms.
Required Forms:
- Volunteer Registration Form
- Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check (BC-1)
- Proof of Negative TB Test (required every four years)
- Volunteer Personal Automobile Use Form (RSK-F106E) and Release of Driver Record Information if transporting students.
About fingerprinting services and TB tests
Volunteers needing fingerprinting must use the Sacramento City Unified School District fingerprinting services at the Serna Center located at 5735 47th Avenue – Sacramento, CA 95824. If you have fingerprints on file with SCUSD, you do not need to complete this process again. Call the Fingerprinting Office at 643-7449 for more information.
You must bring a completed Volunteer Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check Authorization (BC-1) form signed by CKM’s principal with you. The BC-1 form is included in the Volunteer Packet.
The Fingerprinting Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8:30am -10:30am and 1:00pm - 4:30pm. You can reach their office at (916)643-7449.
Parent volunteers need to arrange with their personal physician or a community clinic to undergo a TB test. The district no longer provides TB tests (2015).
