SCUSD Student Advisory Council
Information and Application

My name is Dr. Mark A. Carnero and I am the district lead for the Student Advisory Council (SAC).  The SAC is a year round program that introduces students to concepts of policy advocacy, applied social research, democratic governing, and grassroots organizing.

We are currently building the applicant pool for our 2020-2021 cohort.  It is our hope to have one representative from each of our high schools on the SAC Cabinet.  In addition, we will be recruiting and selecting one Student Board Member to sit on our Board of Education to represent all of our 46,000+ students.  In total, we are recruiting for 14 positions.

This year, we are changing the invitation and selection process for the SAC Cabinet and the Student Board Member position.  To make the process more equitable and inclusive, we have updated the application, election, and nomination processes involved. The application has been included in this email with thorough instructions and details on the process.

We ask that you distribute these applications widely throughout your campus.  We need and a want a diverse selection of non-traditional and traditional leaders to apply for this opportunity.

Please be aware that only incoming Sophomores and higher can apply for the (13) Cabinet Representative positions and only incoming Juniors and higher can apply for the (1) Student Board Member position.

Students who apply to this program should understand that this is a year-long commitment, starting from July 2020 to June 2021.  During the Summer, students will be expected to meet twice a month for team building activities and orientation.  During the regular school year, students will be expected to attend a weekly meeting at the Serna Center for about 1.5 hours.

If you have any additional questions about the program or the positions, please feel free to contact me.

I look forward to working with you all soon!
